VUP Performance
Digital Equipment Corporation introduced dozens of VAX computer models beginning in the late 1970's. Early units were considered extremely powerful systems, however similar to all computer makers, newer systems became more and more powerful over time. Users needed a consistent way to categorize relative performance levels of these units. In response to this Digital established a comparative rating system placing the performance level of the then current VAX 11/780 unit at a rating of 1.0 VUP (VAX Unit of Performance). This rating system was used to easily understand the relative performance level of other VAX systems.
Pyramid Technology Services, Inc. has reproduced the following comparison chart as a service to its customers and to anyone who finds themselves thinking in terms of VUPs. The original author is unknown, however we are grateful for its existence. Please note that PTSI can accept no responsibility for the accuracy of the chart and offers the following simply as a handy reference facility.
The chart has been organized by major model headings such as 11/7xx, 8xxx, 31xx for quicker identification of specific units. In some cases the VUP rating will be presented as a range, in this case the performance level was dependent on either the number of CPUs in the unit or by specific model identifications.
